the 7th Best Living Town in the World
Nong Khai was founded more than two hundred years ago. The area where the province is now situated was once the location of tour small towns called Phan Phao, Viang Cook, Pho Co and Muang Pal. In the reign of King Pama III, Vientiane ruled by Chao Anuvong rebelled against Saim. With the command of King Pama III, Chao Phraya Rajathewee in association with thao Su Who Dhanma (Boon Ma), the governor of Yasathon, and Phraya Chiang So, successfully put dawn the rebellion. After getting rid at Chao Anuvong. King Porno Ill appointed Thao Su Woh Dhanma as the ruler to keep control this area. Thao Su Woh Dhanma decided to set up a big city at Ban Phai situated on the right bank of Mekong River. The city was named after a large pond Nong Khai in the western part of the city

Nakha Fire Ball Phenomenon


The natural Phenomenon that can not be proved till now. At the night of Aok Pansa day (only 1 day on October every year) hundred of fire ball will rise up from the Mekong River. The legend said that is is how the people of the city under the Mekong River pay respect to the one in the heaven. More of the legend could be read in the Nongkhai Legend Book.


Luang Pho Phra Sai


This gold Buddha image is highly revered by the Nong Khai people and dates back to the ancient Lan Chang Lnpire crntuies ago. It is believed the image is one of 3 images commissioned to be molded by the 3 daughters of the king of Lan Chang. In 1778, the images were mived to Vientiane and during the reign of King Rama III, they were briyght to Thailand, but one sank in a stirm. The remaining images were placed in Watpho Chai and Wat Ho Klong. Wat Pho Chai is the temple where Luang Pho Phra Sai is housed. There is a celebrartion erer, the seventh Iunar minth at the temple.


Prap Ho Monument


This Monument was built to honor the dead who crushed the Chinese Ho rebellion of 1986. The Monument, built on the order of Prince Prachak Silpakhom, was originally behind Nongkhai Police station but was moved in 1949 to tis present location at the intersection of roads entering Nongkhai. The Monument has inscriptions in Thai, Chinese, Lao and English. The province holeds a celebration at the monument every March 5th. 

Friendship Bridge (Thai -Laos)


This is the first international bridge spanning the Mekong. The bridge links Nong Khai and Vientiane, and was built jointly by the governments of Australia, Thailand and Laos. The bridge was opened in April 8, 1994.

SaIa Kaew Koo


A unique place with numerous sculptures according to the belief of Buddhism. Sae Kaew Koo is about 3 kms. from Nong Khai on the Nong Khai-Phon Phisai Rd.
